About Roscigno old the Pompeii of 900

Roscigno old the Pompeii of 900 - Roscigno Vecchio | Secret World Trip Planner

a medieval village hidden on the slopes of Mount Pruno, with a large square and a small church of the eighteenth century, a fountain, stores and bars. It was inhabited by peasants and shepherds, shoemakers and blacksmiths, and there was no lack of "don". A small village comparable to many others, but only until 1902, when the danger of a landslide forced the inhabitants to move a little higher. Since that year, Roscigno became a unique village, special and abusive, like the only inhabitant who stubbornly continues to live there. Roscigno Vecchia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1982 Onorato Volzone, journalist of Il Mattino, defined it as the "Pompei of 900". Visiting this small secret village means visiting a place and a time that are no longer there. When we arrived in Roscigno Vecchia, a sign blackened by time warned us not to approach imprudently the existing buildings. The first sensation was that of visiting a ghost town. The houses are encased in beams supporting them and there is a surreal silence. Collapsed walls, broken beams, smashed attics. There are stone portals, the ancient stores barred and in ruins. The blacksmith's forge, the stables, the cellars. Then there is the church: San Nicola. The great Mother Church: eighteenth-century, elegant, deconsecrated. It was abandoned almost half a century ago. Three naves, full of altars. A church of the South. Then there is the square... It is not a real square, in fact it does not resemble any other in the world. It has no pavement, it's a big clearing. There is the fountain, there are the trees, there is the irregular perimeter of stone houses and some have been restored, others are still crumbling. A magical place

Frequently Asked Questions

Journalist Onorato Volzone coined this term in 1982 because Roscigno Vecchia is a perfectly preserved medieval village frozen in time since 1902, when inhabitants were forced to evacuate due to landslide danger. Like Pompeii preserves Roman life, this UNESCO World Heritage Site captures early 20th-century Southern Italian village life with its original structures, shops, church, and square intact but abandoned.
Visitors can explore the 18th-century Church of San Nicola with its three naves and multiple altars, the unique unpaved village square with its fountain and stone houses, ancient blacksmith's forges, stables, cellars, and stone portals of barred shops in various states of decay. Many buildings are reinforced with support beams and some have been partially restored, creating a haunting yet magical atmosphere of a ghost town.
Warning signs at the entrance caution visitors not to approach buildings imprudently, as many structures are unstable with collapsed walls, broken beams, and deteriorating ceilings. It's advisable to stay on designated paths, avoid entering unsecured buildings, and be respectful of the fragile state of this abandoned village while exploring.
Roscigno was abandoned in 1902 when the threat of a devastating landslide on Mount Pruno's slopes forced all inhabitants to relocate to higher ground, creating Roscigno Nuova. This singular event transformed the medieval village—which had been home to peasants, shepherds, shoemakers, blacksmiths, and nobility—into a perfectly preserved time capsule of early 20th-century village life.
Yes, there is one stubborn inhabitant who continues to live in Roscigno Vecchia despite it being abandoned by the rest of the community over a century ago. This solitary resident is part of what makes the village so unique and special, adding to its mysterious character as a near-ghost town.
