About Mantua: Piazza Erbe

Mantua: Piazza Erbe - Mantova | Secret World Trip Planner

It began to take shape when the municipal city, towards the end of the 12th century, began to expand beyond the vault of San Pietro, beyond the ancient Roman city which was located in the then built-up areas of the current Piazza Sordello. A large dirt land on the eastern side of the monastery of Sant’Andrea, was used as a forum for the cattle market. Once the cattle market was moved to a more peripheral location, the space in front of Via di Sant'Andrea, now Via Broletto, where stores rented to merchants had already been built, was divided in two by the Palazzo del Podestà (also called Palazzo del Broletto) and transformed into the administrative heart of the Municipality. The square is bordered by buildings of different periods, and is closed to the north by the rear part of the Palazzo del Podestà to the east by the Palazzo della Regione, which has on its right side the Clock Tower and the Rotunda of San Lorenzo and, at the extreme right side, the so called Casa del Mercante and the adjacent Torre del Salaro.

Frequently Asked Questions

Piazza Erbe began developing in the late 12th century as the municipal city expanded beyond the ancient Roman settlement. Originally used as a cattle market on dirt land east of the Sant'Andrea monastery, it was eventually transformed into the administrative heart of the Municipality when the market relocated and the Palazzo del Podestà divided the space.
The square is framed by the Palazzo del Podestà (also called Palazzo del Broletto) to the north, the Palazzo della Regione to the east with its adjacent Clock Tower, the Rotunda of San Lorenzo, Casa del Mercante, and the Torre del Salaro. These structures from different periods create the square's distinctive architectural character.
The square was originally established as a forum for cattle markets on a large dirt area on the eastern side of the Sant'Andrea monastery. Once the cattle market was moved to a more peripheral location, the space was repurposed and reorganized with merchant stores and the Palazzo del Podestà to serve as the municipality's administrative center.
Visitors can admire the Clock Tower attached to the Palazzo della Regione, explore the historic Rotunda of San Lorenzo, and view the Casa del Mercante and Torre del Salaro. The square also features buildings spanning multiple centuries, offering a fascinating architectural timeline of Mantua's development.
Via Broletto (formerly known as Via di Sant'Andrea) bordered the space where merchants' rental stores were already built before the square's transformation. When the Palazzo del Podestà divided the area, it created the administrative hub we see today, with Via Broletto continuing to serve as an important access point to the square.
