The Sorapiss Group is one of the main mountain groups of the Ampezzo Dolomites. In the side of Cadore we find very high rocky walls, while in the north the slopes are gentler and three small glaciers increase a small lake and its waterfall called "Piss" which gives its name to the whole mountain group.
The legend, which was also used in a famous song by Claudio Baglioni, tells of Misurina, a capricious and mischievous little girl who lives literally held in the palm of her gigantic father’s hand: King Sorapiss who, in order to fulfil the little girl’s umpteenth wish and obtain for her the magic mirror from the Queen of Monte Cristallo, is transformed into a mountain. During the last moments of the transformation he sees the little girl fall and her tears flowing like rivers form the lake under which the little girl with the magic mirror lies forever: Lake Misurina.
It is made up of a central massif including the Punta Sorapiss (3205 m), the Croda Marcora (3154 m) and the Tre Sorelle (3005 m), from which two buttresses break off towards the north. The view of the mountain from Lake Misurina (Auronzo di Cadore) is famous, from where the Sorapìss appears as an amphitheatre of rock which is reflected in the clear waters of the lake.
