The Orsini Fortress in Sorano presents itself as an architectural structure very complex, reachable from the lower part through a door, originally provided with a drawbridge. From port begins a ramp of stairs partially covered that connects two courtyards on different levels, arranged around the oldest area of the complex.
The castle is the original nucleus of the fortification and included the ancient manor house hotel; the moat and the curtain walls to peak were the additional device for the defense of the castle. To its inside, thanks to recent restoration, came to light some frescoes of the sienese school of the Sixteenth Century; some of these, wanted by Niccolò IV Orsini, depict the famous song of Giovanni Boccaccio "I am young girl" (Decameron, IX Day).
The most ancient area also includes a tower with a circular section, which was an integral part of the ancient Rocca Aldobrandesca. The sixteenth-century part of the fortress is composed of a building restored in the neoclassical style, which is located in the second part of the complex along the western side of the walls, largely compromise from the degradation of past centuries. The building is connected to two angular bastions at the tip, that of San Marco to the east and that of San Pietro in the west, where there is also a large coat of arms of the corner.
