The old lighthouse of Trieste: the Lanterna

The beautiful thing about Trieste is that the sea is everywhere. The city overlooks the Gulf and wherever you are you will always be within walking distance of the sea. A walk along Le Rive, maybe in summer, towards evening, makes you feel the true spirit of the city. If you want to walk all the way to the end of the street you will arrive here, where there is a beautiful view with the old lighthouse in the distance. The lighthouse of the Lanterna of Trieste is located on top of the Molo Fratelli Bandiera, at the west end of the city, marking the entrance to the old port. The construction of the lighthouse, which began operation on 11 February 1833, was commissioned by the city governor Carlo Zinzendorf, based on a design by Matteo Pertsch. The lighthouse is supported by a stone column with a cylindrical base that rises from a crenellated Maximilian Tower with two rows of thrones. In addition to its function as a lighthouse, the building was also intended to serve as a port defence. The foundations of the lighthouse rest on what was once the Scoglio dello Zucco. With the construction of the Victory Lighthouse on the hill of Gretta in 1927, the Lanterna ceased to have its original importance. It was therefore deactivated as a lighthouse on November 25, 1969.
