About Nouvel | Kilometro Rosso

Nouvel | Kilometro Rosso - Bergamo | Secret World Trip Planner

The Science and Technology Park "Kilometro Rosso" is a complex for tertiary and industrial use, created on the initiative of Brembo s.p.a., which has built its representative office and offices for industrial research here. Nouvel's design partly recovers some instances of the one, never realized, that Le Corbusier designed for the new Olivetti electronic computing centre in Rho (1959-1965). It is located along the A4 motorway, towards which the project faces a kilometre-long wall made of red lacquered aluminium panels which, besides becoming a strong sign on the territory, also acts as a barrier to noise coming from the automobile artery. Inspired by the poetics of road-movies and the work of Wim Wenders, this contemporary fortification, which reflects on the theme of the perception of architecture in motion, protects a park of over 400,000 square meters - also equipped with an artificial lake - in which many buildings are immersed, built according to different types and technologies and oriented orthogonally to the motorway. All the blocks, however, are organized according to a specific subdivision, which provides reinforced concrete bases on which upper volumes are supported, entirely made of glass and steel to promote views of the greenery, the Park of the Hills and Upper Town (which serve as a perspective backdrop to the settlement) and maximize the benefits of natural lighting for the offices. Between the wall and the green area there is a plate for parking and the thickness of the barrier varies, along the path, to structure a series of pedestrian walkways leading to the different areas designed by the masterplan.

Frequently Asked Questions

The iconic kilometre-long red lacquered aluminium wall is a striking architectural feature that serves a dual purpose: it acts as a powerful visual landmark on the territory while also functioning as a noise barrier protecting the park from the adjacent A4 motorway. The design was inspired by road-movie aesthetics and the cinematic work of Wim Wenders, creating a contemporary fortification that reflects on how architecture is perceived in motion.
Kilometro Rosso is strategically located along the A4 motorway, making it easily accessible by car or public transport connected to major highways. The park's positioning along this major automotive artery was deliberate, with the project designed to face the motorway and create a strong territorial presence visible from passing vehicles.
The 400,000 square meter complex features multiple modern buildings made of glass and steel immersed in a verdant landscape, complete with an artificial lake and the scenic Park of the Hills visible as a backdrop. Visitors can explore the architectural design, walk through pedestrian pathways that wind through the site, and experience how the buildings maximize natural lighting and offer panoramic views of the surrounding greenery and Upper Town.
The park was designed by architect Jean Nouvel and created on the initiative of Brembo s.p.a., which built its representative offices and industrial research facilities here. Nouvel's design partly recovered concepts from Le Corbusier's unrealized 1959-1965 design for an Olivetti computing centre in Rho, blending historical architectural references with contemporary aesthetics and road-movie poetics.
The park features a distinctive orthogonal layout with all buildings oriented perpendicular to the motorway, supported by reinforced concrete bases with upper volumes entirely in glass and steel to maximize transparency and natural light. The varying thickness of the red barrier wall creates a series of structured pedestrian walkways, while the complex is surrounded by over 400,000 square meters of landscaped parkland with an artificial lake that integrates nature into the industrial design.
