Legend tells of savages who went to the mountains of the Braies Valley in search of gold and stones. Greedy and envious shepherds in the valley tried to steal their treasures, but they were unsuccessful because, in order to protect the treasure, the latter opened underground fountains and threw the treasure into Lake Braies.
This natural mountain lake formed by a landslide attracts year-round hikers, cyclists and climbers to its shores, promises and gives you relaxation and a nice refreshment after a long day in the mountains, and will leave you speechless with its impressive mountain panorama. Impressive is the famous Croda del Becco, 2,810 m high, in Ladin Sas dla Porta: its German name "Torberg" indicates, that according to legend Lake Braies was once the gate (Tor) to the underground kingdom of the Fanes.
