On the beautiful Piazza del Vescovado, silent in the centre of the village, the Cathedral of Casertavecchia overlooks the shade of the bell tower. It is the most important and suggestive building of worship in the area: dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, the Cathedral dates back to 1129 and over the centuries has been influenced by various styles. Today, after the last restoration in 1926, the Duomo has regained its original Romanesque style. This elegant tufa building, austere and majestic, is worth a visit especially for the many treasures it houses inside. On either side of the entrance two stone lions welcome visitors, while in front of the altar stand out the animal figures of the mosaic floor dating back to 1213.
The walls are entirely decorated with animals and floral motifs, symbols of the Christian faith, and a small 14th century chapel next to the altar houses the original frescoes.
The fresco of Mary Most Holy of Graces is on the right of the entrance and depicts the Virgin Mary with the Child on her knees intent on blessing. In the center of the church there is a beautiful Baroque pulpit of 1600, embellished with five marble columns with capitals all different from each other. The wooden crucifix behind the altar dates back to 1500.
Beside the Duomo stands the beautiful Bell Tower: built in 1234, it stands 32 meters above the square and has five floors adorned with mullioned windows decorated with human figures.
