Piazza Vescovado in Casertavecchia is the center of this beautiful medieval village, the junction of the narrow streets and the meeting point of the few inhabitants and tourists for a break and a good coffee. Here, among pergolas, old signs and small bars, there are the most important buildings of Casertavecchia: the Duomo, the Bishop’s Palace, the former seminary. In the center of the square also stands out a series of granite columns in front of the Duomo: it is believed that they represented the right of asylum of the Church.
The Bishop’s Palace overlooking the square allows you to admire arches and windows that date back to 1300, while in front of the Cathedral opens the building that once housed the seminary.
Today the seminary is the residence of the parish priest of Casertavecchia and it is a historic building, decorated with a central door with marble columns. Inside the palace you can admire a wrought iron cross that was placed here in 1953, to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Cathedral’s consecration to the cult of St. Michael the Archangel.
