The Verrucola castle has dominated the homonymous medieval village since the beginning of the XII century. It has undergone important structural changes over the centuries, and has been hit by more than one earthquake. What distinguishes it in Lunigiana, the ‘land of a hundred castles’, is its recent history, starting from 1975. In that year it was bought, in a very bad state, by the sculptor Pietro Cascella and his wife Cordelia von den Steinen, also a sculptor, who still lives there together with their son Jacopo, a painter. The Cascella family, artists for generations, made this a place of cultural exchange, hosting artists from all over the world: a real creative forge in a very lively cultural climate. The spaces were and still are used to create the sketches and numerous works of the family and their guests. At present it is possible to visit a truly impressive collection. The visit is supervised by a trusted person of the family. As in the past, the castle is not intended to be a mere museum: the key to making it live must be the continuous artistic and cultural stimulation.
