Duke Alfonso II d’Este was the one who built the "Fortress of Mont’Alfonso," which covers an area of about 60,000 square meters, making it one of the largest historical sites in the valley. Taking advantage of his skills as a military strategist, he managed to create a place that was impregnable and inaccessible to the enemy; according to legend, the fortress is connected to the Rocca Ariosteca of Castelnuovo by secret passages.
