In Mammiano Basso, with the help of the local Lima stream, iron has been produced since 1704. In spite of this, given the conformation of the valley, the most notable urban settlement has always been on the other side of the river, on the Popiglio side: for this reason engineer Vincenzo Douglas Scotti, director of the metallurgical plant, decided in 1920 to have a suspension bridge built across the valley, to shorten the daily journey of the workers from their homes to the foundry by several kilometres. The project was very daring, but the work was nevertheless completed in two years, and only local workers were employed. The bridge, made of steel with metal rods anchored to concrete bases at both ends, is 80 centimetres wide, but at 212.40 metres long it is one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world, and was a record-breaker at the time of its construction. At its highest point it passes over the Lima stream at a height of about 40 metres.
