Among the highest peaks of the Apennines, Capracotta is an important ski resort and is located near the Garden of Apennine Flora, a botanical garden at high altitude where you can admire numerous species of local flowers and plants. The origins of the name of the village are mainly linked to a legend that tells that some gypsies, had decided to burn a goat as a founding rite, in the exact place where they had decided to build their city. The goat fled to the mountains, where it died, and the gypsies decided to found the city there. A research instead claims that Capracotta derives from the Latin "castra cocta", a military camp, an expression probably linked to a Roman detachment that had there its seat of control of the Sangro valley. The parish church of the Assunta dates back to 1673 and contains many noteworthy paintings. Just outside the village you can admire the Baronial Palace built in the XVI century.
