The Collemeluccio MAB reserve and the Montedimezzo reserve (only 15 km away) cover an area of 654ha and have been part of a UNESCO "Man And Biosphere" (MAB) programme since 1971, which aims to protect biological diversity and promote sustainable development.
It is a representative area of the typical mountain forest landscape of the central-southern Apennines, characterized by the presence of Turkey oak and beech trees.
The fauna is also very rich and includes wild boars, hares, weasels, beech martens, foxes, buzzards, owls, barn owls, squirrels and dormice.
In the area of Montedimezzo, which until 1825 was a Royal Bourbon Hunting Reserve, the visitor centre houses a museum with wood from the woods of the reserve, geological finds and specimens of local fauna.
