Another rarity is the Abruzzo chamois, the most beautiful in the world for the contrasting pattern of its coat and its form, which is slenderer and even more elegant than its Alpine cousin. It has found itself on the brink of extinction several times, but the foundation of the park has saved it, and the chamois population is now large and steadily growing. It isn’t particularly timid, and there is a good chance of meeting a few, particularly in the evening or early morning. The best place to see them is the Rose Valley, south of Civitella Alfedena.
