The station, the work of the architect Narciso Clavería initiatedó its construction in the year 1914 by decision of King Alfonso XIII, who decided to replace the old stationón of the city inaugurated in 1858 on the occasion of the arrival of the Railway to Toledo, for a station at the height of the historic city that received an increasing number of visitors, including many royal visits.

The station was inaugurated in April 1919 and from the beginning was considered one of the most beautiful stations in Spain. It was built in Neomudejar style, including some of the most characteristic elements of the craftsmanship of Toledo: tiles, gold and silver work, wrought iron, latticework. Particularly noteworthy are the works made in wrought iron by the artist Julio Pascual from Toledo.

In 1991 the building was declared of Cultural Interest with the category of monument and in 2005, coinciding with the arrival of the high speed train to the city of Toledo, its first restoration was carried out; its first restoration, modernizing at the same time its facilities, which despite everything have continued to retain the charm that makes the station Toledo one of the most beautiful in Spain.
