There would be no Lucca without its characteristic walls that protect it – more than anything else they did in the past, although they have not been much used for this purpose – and that make it so unique. It is one of the most significant examples of Renaissance fortifications left in Europe. Four kilometers and a little more that have become a reference point for both locals and tourists: the right place to take a nice walk while observing the city skyline from which a bell tower or a tower often pops up. It is thanks to Maria Luisa di Borbone, who was the reigning duchess of Lucca from 1815 to 1824, that the structure of the walls was converted into the pedestrian passageway on which it is now so pleasant to walk, and that in front of the walls, before entering the city, there are large meadows.
