The Paleochristian Baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore in Nocera Superiore, also known as "La Rotonda", can be discovered in all its beauty.
A very ancient religious building, probably built in the second half of the VI century A.D., with the function of Baptistery. The Baptistery is one of the most ancient buildings of the whole countryside, in fact it dates back to the sixth century AD. The structure is also called La Rotonda, because of its circular shape. Inside, the main environment, always with a circular base has a double colonnade, surmounted by a dome.
In the centre is the main element: the baptismal font. With its 7 meters in diameter it is one of the largest basins in Italy. It has a hexagonal shape outside and circular inside. The structure is very well preserved, and also includes small chapels with ancient frescoes.
Probably this building was part of a wider worship complex which included a Basilica and a Bell Tower, now disappeared.
