Sanctuary Basilica of Sant’Alfonso
The church was commissioned and designed by Sant´Alfonso himself, who entrusted the project and the direction of the works to the royal architect Pietro Cimafonte.
The construction, begun in 1756, was completed after several interruptions only in 1824.
In 1908 the church was elevated to Papal Basilica by Pope Pius X.
The Latin cross-shaped interior has a single nave with 4 side chapels dedicated to St. Gerardo Maiella, St. Clement M. Hofbauer, St. Joseph and Our Lady of the Rosary.
The facade in neoclassical style, with stucco decorations and columns, was built in 1823 by Filippo Conforto.
In 1824, Carmine Calvanese made the statues of Saints Peter and Paul, placed in two niches on either side of the entrance.
