The Franciscan sanctuary of St. Francis and St. Anthony is a Franciscan sanctuary, dedicated to Saints Francis of Assisi and Anthony of Padua. The church, dating back to 1500, was recently rebuilt, on three levels, after the 1980 Irpinia earthquake had largely razed it to the ground.Adjacent to the church is the convent of the Friars Minor, which houses a prestigious library, the monumental crib, the reception center Pilgrim’s House and the Canteen of the Poor. Characteristic of the sanctuary is the launch of the largest botafumeiro (censer) in the world, as it happens in Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The censer can contain 10 kg of coal and 3 kg of incense. The launch is made every 13 of the month plus other special occasions, such as Christmas, Easter, etc.. etc..
