The Lake Burano Reserve was established in 1980 and was the first oasis managed by the WWF. It is located in the municipality of Capalbio and occupies an area of 410 hectares between Ansedonia and Chiarone, 140 of which are occupied by the lake. It is a coastal brackish lake, about 3 km long and separated from the sea by a double cordon of sand dunes. On the lake "vigila" the Tower of Buranaccio, a fortification built at the time of the State of Presidia (half of the 16th century). In the reed thicket live numerous river nightingales, reed warblers, castagnoli gallows and marsh millet. There are also several species of ducks such as blackberries and pochards. Among the birds of prey are the marsh harrier and the osprey. In the bush and among the sandy clearings of the dune live the fallow deer, the porcupine.
