The first news of the Castle of Manciano, on a hill in the valley of the river Albegna, is had in 1118 thanks to a document of Pope Clement III regarding the nearby church of Sovana. The fortress is situated at the highest point of the town. Remodeled over the years, it is a crenellated building that rises above an imposing shoe base. Its construction is supposed to be attributed to the Aldobrandeschi around the XII century, it is known for sure that it was restored first in 1424 by the Sienese and then in 1772 under the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. During this last restoration, the main entrance was transferred from the south side to the west side, where it is still located today.
