The Gravina Laterza Oasis is important because it represents a unique and specific habitat of a part of our country. The ravines are real cracks in the soil, a sort of canyon engraved in the middle of the Murge plateau, and present only in this part of Italy between Puglia and Basilicata. The ravine of Laterza is the second in Europe.
The ravine extends for 12 kilometers in the rural territory, with several loops, and is deep, in some places, more than 200 meters, and more than four hundred wide. It also has very steep walls, almost vertical, used for free climbing.
Even the fauna has its peculiarities and the birds are well represented with species of absolute charm and of great conservation importance: majestic Egyptian vultures (Capovaccai) and more agile crickets travel far and wide the ravine, while in spring echoes the melodious song of the Lonely Sparrow and the Nun performs in her wedding flights.
