The Toirano Caves are an impressive group of karst caves under the Varatella valley on the Riviera di Ponente near Savona. There are about 70 caves of prehistoric formation that still preserve skeletons of prehistoric animals and human evidence that are lost in the mists of time, making the visit special for geology enthusiasts and children. Descending deep under the ground of this complex, the caves of Bàsura or of the Witches and the Cave of Santa Lucia stand out, which among their mineral formations conceal and preserve fossils, footprints and archaic images engraved on the walls.
