The monastery complex of Santa Caterina in Finalborgo, founded in 1359 by the Marquises Del Carretto, was built in an area adjacent to the western walls of Burgus Finarii. After its transformation into a prison between 1865 and 1965, with the subsequent restoration it became a cultural centre, home to the Archaeological Museum of Finale, the Civic Library and art gallery.
Few areas in Italy have provided, like the Finale area, so many testimonies of the different human species that succeeded each other between the Lower and Upper Palaeolithic (350 mile-10 thousand years ago). The Museo Archeologico del Finale (MAF) is one of the most significant cultural realities of Italian and European Prehistory, thanks to the territorial context in which it is inserted, particularly rich in archaeological sites in caves, scientifically investigated for about 150 years, which have become a reference point for international research.
