About Our Lady's Water

Our Lady's Water - Castellammare di Stabia | Secret World Trip Planner

The religious complex had been built on the ruins of a church built in 1580 in honor of Our Lady of Porto Salvo precisely. This original construction had then been demolished about two hundred years later to make way for the shipyards of Castellammare di Stabia. Thanks to its properties, the water of the Madonna maintains its organoleptic characteristics unchanged over time, which is why it was used in the past by sailors about to embark on long voyages, taking it directly from the spring that also overlooked the sea. Precisely because of its use, it was also called sailors' water. In 2014, the taps of the Madonna water and the sour water were closed for several months due to numerous reports regarding the presence of polluting residues found in the fountains on Duilio Street. Following analyses and maintenance work commissioned by the city to the pipes, it was once again possible to enjoy these special waters still considered among the healthiest in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Lady's Water originates from a religious complex built on the ruins of a 1580 church dedicated to Our Lady of Porto Salvo. The original church was demolished around 1780 to make way for shipyards, but the sacred spring continued to flow and became historically significant as sailors took it on long voyages for its exceptional properties.
The water earned the nickname 'sailors' water' because mariners departing on long voyages would collect it directly from the spring that overlooked the sea, trusting in its unique organoleptic properties to remain unchanged during their journeys. This practice made it a legendary resource among seafarers in the region.
The taps for both Madonna water and sour water are located on Duilio Street in Castellammare di Stabia. After maintenance work and water quality analyses commissioned by the city in 2014, the fountains were reopened and the water is still considered among the healthiest in the world.
Yes, the water is safe to drink following the 2014 closure. The fountains were shut down temporarily due to polluting residues found in the distribution system, but after comprehensive analyses and maintenance work on the pipes, they were reopened and the water maintains its excellent quality.
Our Lady's Water is renowned for maintaining its organoleptic characteristics unchanged over time, which is why it has been valued for centuries by sailors and locals alike. This exceptional stability in its properties, combined with its historical significance and continued recognition as one of the world's healthiest waters, makes it uniquely special.
