Lucignano is a small village in the Val di Chiana, situated at the top of a hill on the border between the ancient possessions of Florence, Arezzo, Siena and Perugia.it is a well-preserved medieval fortified village whose fortunate geographical location in a dominant position over the Val di Chiana and on the road between Siena and Arezzo, has made it strategically important since ancient times and has marked its history as a medieval castle strongly contested between the neighboring territories. The village is an intricate labyrinth of narrow streets, overlooked by old aristocratic palaces, which lead to the top of the hill, where the Palazzo Comunale, the Church of St. Francis and the Collegiate Church are located, to descend on the other side, where there are more popular houses. The town has maintained intact over time its charm of an ancient village, preserving a peaceful and serene image where the agricultural and artisan traditions continue to coexist, with many products ranging from fine extra virgin olive oil to honey, from the production and restoration of furniture to the work of carving, from the fine production of ceramics to ‘goldsmithery, from the traditional working of pietra serena to travertine. A visit to Lucignano, in addition to a walk through its historic centre, must include a stop at some of its characteristic places, such as the Medici fortress, the Piazza delle Logge, the three gates to the village, the medieval walls, the sanctuary of the Madonna della Querce, the Capuchin monastery, the churches of the Misericordia and the Collegiata, with the beautiful travertine staircase that takes up the ellipsoidal design of the village.
