Leonessa: A lovely medieval village

A charming mountain village with a medieval town plan, Leonessa has kept intact monuments of great interest. This is the case of the Farnesiana Fountain – 16th century – a gift from Margherita D’Austria, which enhances Piazza 7 Aprile 1944 in front of the ancient Palazzo Mongalli, seat of the Town Hall; and also the Church of San Francesco dating back to the middle of the 13th century with its evocative polychrome terracotta nativity scene from the 16th century and the crypt discovered only in 1993 with its precious Giottesque inspired frescoes by different authors but all from the 15th-16th century. To visit also the other churches, San Pietro, San Giuseppe, Santa Maria del Popolo, San Carlo all important caskets of as many important works of art. Citta’ d’Arte and Bandiera Arancione (Orange Flag), lying at a good one thousand meters, in a wide basin inside the Apennines on the border between Lazio, Umbria and Abruzzo, Leonessa offers to the lovers of open air trips the possibility to make wonderful excursions in the complex of Terminillo.
