Kauppatori, Helsinki’s market square

Kauppatori is the market square in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. It is, together with the nearby Senate Square, the most famous place in the city. Its particularity is that it overlooks the Gulf of Finland, particularly on the north side of Helsinki’s southern port. The square opens onto the extension of one of the city’s main tree-lined avenues, the Esplanadi. In the centre of the square is the Havis Amanda fountain. There are numerous banquets selling cooked fish to eat on site or seasonal fruit and mushrooms, as well as souvenirs of all kinds.
