Enso-Gutzeit Building is one of the many architectural marvels built by Alvar Aalto. A magnificent sight and a must-see for architecture lovers. The Enso-Gutzeit Building was, and is, the headquarters of one of Finland’s largest pulp and paper companies – Enso-Gutzeit Oy then, and Stora Enso Oyj today. The building occupes an imposing site at the waterfront at the end of the Esplanade, with the Russian Orthodox Church behind. In this position its low, regular profile with the long loggia on the roof, have tones of Venetian palace. The facade is made up of square windows with wooden frames deeply set into white marble surrounds. While superficially similar to many more mundane concrete office blocks since, it stands out for its detailing, its materials, and the complex geometry hidden behind the formal front facade.
