Imagine a small sheet of water surrounded by mountains and rocky spurs, in the green heart of an almost uncontaminated nature. This is how the lake of San Domenico looks like. The wonderful San Domenico Lake is one of the most suggestive sheets of water in Abruzzo. Characterized by bright colors ranging from turquoise to bright blue, it is one of the most popular attractions in the province of L’Aquila. Lake San Domenico, situated in the municipality of Villalago, near the hermitage of San Domenico. The lake originates from a dam completed in 1929 on behalf of the State Railways to convert the Rome-Sulmona line to electric traction. The depth of the Lake of San Domenico is 920 metres, and it is possible to carry out organised scuba diving. Among the many activities that can be undertaken in the vicinity of the lake, particularly interesting are the trekking routes. One of the most suggestive is the one that leads from the lake to the Hermitage of San Domenico. It is a tourist path suitable for everyone, easy to walk on a dirt path. In total, the route has 3.5 kilometres and a difference in height of 130 metres. The duration of the walk is less than 3 hours, including any stops.
