The Cantine Storiche Contratto in its 151 years of history, have gone from producing Moscato and still wines, to Metodo Classico, tonic and Vermouth sparkling wines. The historic winery, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a real treasure, unique of its kind. This huge underground cathedral extends for more than 5000 square meters; dug into the marl that makes up the hill behind the small town of Canelli, it reaches a depth of 32 meters.
At its elegant Art Nouveau building and its charming garden, Contratto will welcome you. You can visit a gallery of ancient documents and the fascinating Sala dei Sacchi which houses a small museum of tools and machines once used for winemaking.
The highlight of the tour is a visit to the cellar. For almost 150 years these environments have witnessed the maturation before sparkling wines based on Moscato and since the 1940s of the classic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as handmade Vermouth.
