About Castle of Castelpoggio

Castle of Castelpoggio - Ponte di Legno | Secret World Trip Planner

Fascinating is the Castle of Castelpoggio, in the locality of Poia. It stands at the western entrance to Ponte di Legno. As far back as the 7th century, at the height of the Lombard era, a fortification stood here, but it was dismantled in 1455, following the edict issued by Venice for the destruction of the Camusian fortresses. The ruins were still visible in 1853, but in 1914, during wartime, military structures, trenches and communication trenches were erected. It was Count Giuseppe Zechi de Zan, in 1922, who bought the hillock and had the present manor built. After World War II, the building was divided into 21 mini-apartments, distributed among the main core, the old stables, the butler's house and the chapel.

The original fortress was dismantled in 1455 following a Venetian edict to destroy Camusian fortresses, though ruins remained visible until 1853, when the site was repurposed for military structures during World War I before being transformed into a manor by Count Giuseppe Zechi de Zan in 1922.
The Castle of Castelpoggio is situated in the locality of Poia at the western entrance to Ponte di Legno in Italy. Its strategic location at this gateway has made it historically significant since medieval times.
Today, the castle building houses 21 mini-apartments distributed among the main manor, old stables, butler's house, and chapel, which were created after World War II. While the property is now residential, visitors interested in the historical site should inquire locally about viewing opportunities or architectural appreciation from exterior vantage points.
The original 7th-century Lombard fortification was dismantled in 1455 following an edict issued by Venice ordering the destruction of Camusian fortresses. The ruins of this medieval structure remained visible until the mid-19th century, when they were largely obscured.
Count Giuseppe Zechi de Zan purchased the hillock in 1922 and commissioned the construction of the present-day manor house on the site. After World War II, the manor was converted into residential apartments, transforming it from a private estate into a multi-unit residential property.
