In the highest part of the town hill of Squillace, stand the imposing walls and towers of the Castle. It was first a Byzantine fortification, built on the ruins of the Castellense Monastery of Cassiodoro. The castle of Squillace, called Stridula, was built by Guglielmo D’Altavilla in 1044.
It has stone walls, very high, with a rusticated portal surmounted by the marble coat of arms of the Borgia family, in fact, the castle is called the Borgia family because this family, related to Pope Alexander VI, owes the period of greatest splendor of the fortress. They were lords of Squillace for about 250 years between 1494 and 1736. According to some historical sources, Goffredo Borgia met and married the charming Sancia of Aragon, nephew of King Frederick, and the couple lived in Squillace for some years.
The façade has two large towers, one cylindrical and the other polygonal.
