The Complex of Saints Peter and Andrew was founded in 726 by Abbone, governor of Moriana and Susa, along an important pilgrimage route, which became an important stage of the Via Francigena. The abbey reached the height of its splendour in the 9th century, welcoming more than five hundred monks. Besides the church rebuilt in 1712, there is the cloister and there are four chapels dedicated to San Salvatore, San Michele, Santa Maria Maddalena and Sant’Eldrado completely frescoed. The Abbey is situated in Val Cenischia, a valley near Susa, not far from the village of Novalesa. The monastery of Saints Peter and Andrew still houses a Benedictine monastic community of the Cassinese Sublacensis Congregation.
