To discover the real desert of Tunisia, you need to enter the southernmost region of the country and stay in the beautiful village of Douz, known as "the gateway to the desert". Douz is the oldest oasis in Tunisia: it stands close to the Sahara Desert, between white sand dunes and authentic date palm forests that have made the economy of this resort flourish over the centuries. In addition, Douz has always been an essential stop for the caravans that from the south of the Sahara headed to the Tunisian coast. The nomadic culture of the M’razig, nomadic shepherds who have always preferred to live in the authenticity of desert life, is still present here today. Very well known is the Souq of Douz, the city market, where spices and handicrafts that colour and perfume the whole city are sold; weekly there is a cattle market where the shepherds come early in the morning to get the best donkeys and dromedaries. Douz has a privileged position for tourism: full of hotels that offer all the comforts and a splendid view of the dunes, it is the perfect place to stay in view of an excursion in the desert.
