Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti consists of five islands (San Domino, the most famous, San Nicola, the historical and administrative center, Capraia, Cretaccio, Pianosa) and a few very modestly sized rocks. It lies some 20 kilometers off the northern coast of Gargano. The Tremiti Islands cover a total area of about 3 square kilometers. The only inhabited islands are San Nicola and San Domino with a population of about 350 inhabitants (who, moreover, do not reside there for the entire year), making the municipality the smallest in Apulia but, arguably, the most famous from a tourist point of view, as evidenced also by the residences of numerous VIPs. The archipelago of the Tremiti Islands is a small corner of paradise, where the clarity of the sea, the colorful and clean seabed, the pleasant climate, the pure air, the lush vegetation, the unspoiled nature, and the coasts opened by evocative coves and caves create areas of ethereal beauty that no sea and nature lover should resist. This extraordinary sanctuary of nature has been awarded the much-deserved Blue Flag recognition. The island of San Domino, the largest, is covered with a forest of Aleppo pines and holm oaks and is certainly the most beautiful from a landscape-naturalistic point of view. The island of San Nicola is very rich in monuments, evidence of the islands’ history: towers, imposing fortifications, walls, churches and cloisters of a fortress-abbey, Santa Maria a Mare, which holds significant historical and artistic interest.
