Scarlino is located in a beautiful position on a hillock 229 meters high overlooking the plain of Follonica and the sea.The country is located inland Maremma, precisely in the area of metalliferous hills. In the thirteenth century, probably in 1240, was among the first countries of the Maremma to be organized as a free municipality. The town is dominated by the Pisan Fortress of the thirteenth century (its visit is very impressive) in front of which is an archaeological park that has returned findings from the late Bronze Age (XII – X centuries BC). All the finds from the excavations can be admired in the Territorial Documentation Centre (located in the town hall), including the treasure of Scarlino, the terracotta vase containing 100 gold florins from seven different mints.
The walls also depart from the Rocca, encompassing the entire town, and have maintained intact the typical charm of medieval villages made up of alleys, lanes and gates, of which there are three in Scarlino: Porta della Fonte, Porta Scabris and Porta a Mare.
