The mountain of Viggiano (1723 m.), in the heart of the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park, offers visitors one of the most evocative and spectacular corners created by "Mother Nature". Surrounded by beech woods and uncontaminated scenery, the mountain offers the opportunity to enjoy unique and emotional experiences through many sports and outdoor activities.
Following the itineraries that wind along the most interesting roads and paths in the area is like entering an enchanted place, especially in spring thanks to the myriad of blossoms, and in the first warm colours of autumn, when the landscape is tinged with the autumn season.
But the Montagna Grande of Viggiano confirms itself as the "queen" of the Val d’Agri for winter sports. In fact, thanks to the presence of the ski complex, it is possible to practice cross-country skiing and downhill skiing.
The SKIarea offers two ski lifts and a manovia that serve tracks suitable for all levels, drawn in the middle of picturesque beech forests. The school field has a special slope, served by a conveyor belt. It is also possible to practice snow tubing and Nordic walking, or go sledding and snowshoeing.
An illumination system also allows night skiing, on the occasion of special events and festivities, to experience the thrill of living the "white lady" under the stars.
Alternatively, for those who want a more adrenaline-filled excursion, there is sport climbing, climbable with only plaques and a rope longer than 40 metres and 10 quickdraws.
Near the ski facilities, you can visit the Museum of the Apennine Wolf, located in a wooden hut and managed by the experts of the Centre for Environmental Education and Sustainability (CEAS). But that’s not all, at the foot of the track, to welcome tourists there are also local bar and the accommodation "Rifugio Fontana dei Pastori".
