The famous little red cogwheel train from Chamonix will take you up to the top of the Montenvers at 1,913m. All around you is an extraordinary panorama of the Mer de Glace glacier, the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses.
Once there, don’t miss a visit to the ice grotto, a real journey into the heart of the glacier. This grotto, carved out every year, describes the life of mountain dwellers at the beginning of the 19th century. It is accessible either on foot, via a path about 20 minutes long, or by cable car. Caution: at the exit of the cable car, 580 steps separate you from the cave entrance.
A true vestige of the climate change of our century, the Montenves site deserved a space dedicated entirely to glaciology! By visiting this interactive and educational space, you will discover the Mer de Glace, its formation, history and future evolution.
The total visit (including the cave and the walk) lasts on average 2-3 hours. The visit time can be doubled in the event of a large number of visitors.
