Overlooking the river Dordogne, this place will delight walkers with its restful and scented paths, boxwood hedges and a belvedere with a magnificent view over the Dordogne valley and the charming village of La Roque-Gageac.The Gardens of Marqueyssac are part of the castle of the same name located in the small French village of Vézac. The gardens extend within a park of 22 hectares, consisting of 6 kilometres of paths lined with over 150,000 hundred-year-old boxwood trees, saplings and evergreen plants, masterfully designed according to the strictest rules of the ancient art of topiary. A game of sophisticated geometries with sinuous and rounded shapes created by the hand of man, a technique capable of giving the vegetation an elegant and imaginative movement.
The appearance of the garden with its sinuous paths is typical of the development of taste in France under Napoleon III.
The well-illustrated messages provide concise information on the main animal and plant species encountered.
Several events are organised on the site each year: "The Great Easter Egg Hunt" on Easter Sunday afternoon and Easter Monday, the "Garden Festival" every first Sunday in June, and finally the "Soirées aux chandelles" (candlelit evenings) every Thursday evening in July and August, when the gardens will be illuminated by two thousand candles.
