Domme is classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France and occupies a splendid position high above the Dordogne river. The village is lovely and the views are a bonus as is the cave system that sits right underneath the main square.It is a very attractive bastide town, founded in 1283 and situated in an exceptional hilltop location.
It is sometimes called the "Akropolis des Périgord". Domme is famous for its fortifications, which were completed by 1310. The Porte des Tours with the main entrance loads to two drum-shaped towers of stone on the east and west part of the wall. The hall, was first erected in 17th century, facing the main marketplace.The Maison du Gouverneur, on the Place de la Halle, is a fortress-like building with tower and turrets and it is the main part of the town.
