The Alpine Biology Centre was officially opened in 1994 and its mission is to promote university teaching and scientific research, but also to promote scientific communication to the general public. The Centre was created by the Canton Ticino in collaboration with the Universities of Geneva and Zurich and, recently, with the contribution of the University of Italian Switzerland and the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland. Thanks to these collaborations, laboratories have been set up at an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level to host annual research and teaching activities of 12 different universities with regular attendance.
While giving priority to university courses, the Centre is also open to other schools and to a wider public and is suitable for naturalistic stays, laboratory work, seminars, workshops and conferences. The scientific and didactic contents of the activities are the responsibility of the universities or organising institutions.
