The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine – 500 years old in 2017
Visiting the most innovative adventure centre for salt mining in the world, you can become part of an entirely new and modern experience below the earth’s surface.Visitor train, salt cathedral, salt laboratory, treasure vault and mirror lake are at the core of a multimedia installation covering an underground floor area of approximately 6000 square metres. The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine has been in continuous operation since 1517. Salt deposits are detected in the area of the Salt Mine up to 300 m below the valley floor. There is a huge salt dome deep in the mountains, which was formed about 250 million years ago by the evaporation of an ancient sea.
