Situated in the centre of the picturesque Upper Engadine valley at an altitude of about 1856 metres, St. Moritz is one of Switzerland's most popular destinations for international tourism. - Lake St. Moritz is the smallest of the three Upper Engadine lakes, but it is also the liveliest in terms of sporting activities. During the summer season it is criss-crossed by sails, while in winter, when it is frozen over, spectacular polo and cricket tournaments are organised. The 1928 Winter Olympics were held here. St. Moritz is one of the best known ski resorts in Switzerland. A favourite destination for the international jet set, who historically appreciate the town's unique and sophisticated atmosphere. Elegant boutiques and jeweller's shops line the town centre, where a stroll is always a pleasure. There are also relaxing walks along the lake. St. Moritz was originally known for its ancient thermal springs, whose beneficial effects are still appreciated today. In short, a perfect fusion of typical mountain resort charm. The town's fame dates back to 1864, when hotelier Johannes Badrutt made a bet with some of his British guests who frequented the resort during the summer season. Guests fell in love with the town even during the cold season and from that moment on, the resort became one of the most famous winter resorts in the world. The city has a lot to offer in terms of sports, nature, relaxation but also in terms of shopping, thanks to the presence of shops of the best international brands. In summer you can take beautiful walks in the middle of nature, walk along the 400km of trails suitable for mountain biking or, alternatively, go to the lake to do activities such as windsurfing, rowing or sailing. In winter St. Moritz offers its numerous ski slopes (mountaineering and cross-country), bobsleigh tracks and toboggan runs as well as several spas.
