The Sator square is a recurring Latin inscription, in the form of a magic square, consisting of the following five words: SATOR, AREPO, TENET, OPERA, ROTAS. Their juxtaposition, in the order indicated, gives rise to a palindrome, i.e. a sentence that remains identical when read from left to right and vice versa.A magic square of the Sator is found on the stones of the outer left wall of the cathedral, opposite the archbishop’s palace.
According to some, it is a talisman of the alchemists with thaumaturgical function; according to others, a satanic symbol, or even a simple puzzle.
