Salerno : Dolphin Fountain

The monumental fountain was built in 1997 on a project by the Neapolitan architect Riccardo Dalisi, recently awarded the Compasso d’Oro (the oldest and most prestigious industrial design award in the world), with the aim of proposing the square as the city’s "new urban living roomà. The composition consists of an octagonal basin with two steps – a reference to the Tenna fountain in Piazza Abate Conforti – at the center of which are two dolphins supporting a metal plate. Characteristic are the two dolphins made in a non-symmetrical way: one is resting on the rear fin, and holds the plate with the dorsal holds the plate with the front dorsal, while the other rests on the ground with the ventral and pectoral fins and holds the plate with the caudal fin.
