Pomegranate Gateway

If you are in the San Salvario area, near Via Nizza, and more precisely in the adjacent Via Argentero, you may catch a glimpse of a magnificent front door of a characteristic building that the people of Turin have nicknamed "Portone del Melograno." The building is reminiscent in several respects of some Spanish houses whose characteristics are found in the use of colored majolica tiles and iron to support the balconies. The beautiful and distinctive front door of the building is made of wrought iron. Inside are carved two pomegranate trees rich with green leaves and red fruits, set in a peacock-tailed frame in floral style. This gateway, in perfect Art Nouveau style and perhaps the most scenic gateway among the many historic buildings in the city, truly a marvel of refinement and elegance. It was created in 1907 by architect Pietro Fenoglio.
