Oratory of St. Lawrence

For centuries the seat of the confraternity of the same name, it has very ancient origins. Although the earliest record, to date found, pertaining to the confraternity of St. Lawrence dates back to 1514, from a valuable register kept in the oratory, which records the names of deceased brethren from the founding of the confraternity until 1855, it appears to have been founded in 1400.

The Oratory of St. Lawrence dates back to 1200 and externally the bas-relief depicting the saint stands out. Inside are preserved a 17th-century painting depicting the Martyrdom of the Saint, the nativity scene of the 17th-century Ligurian school, the 17th-century crucifix used for processions and some Gino Grimaldi works. Finally, in recent years è another nativity scene was added, this time in terracotta, in which Luca Damonte – local artist and potter – depicted characters and landscapes of Cogoleto. Among the statues that animate the nativity scene is also that of Christopher Columbus of Cogoleto, discoverer of America, and a depiction of the house where he was born in the Caroggio district.
