About Olivella Church

Olivella Church - Strada Comunale Dell'Olivella | Secret World Trip Planner

Coming from the narrow road that descends from Porta Romana to encircle the town, there is the small church located just before the Bisleti sub-portico. Formerly at this place was Porta Piccola, which, until the earthquake of 1350, led to the Basilica of Santa Salome via a steep slope.

Olivella Church - Strada Comunale Dell'Olivella | Secret World Trip Planner

Along this path in the 13th century the faithful had the image of Our Lady painted on a rock, which then remained hidden for many centuries under the rubble of the earthquake. In 1722, the ancient effigy came back to light and the people of Verola called it " Madonna dell'Olivello," after the olive tree that had sprung up next to the rock. Then a small octagonal temple was built on the site and retaining walls were raised around the area, which was steep and full of cliffs. Later the building was enlarged through the generosity of Cardinal Bisleti (buried here) and became the present Church of Olivella.

Frequently Asked Questions

The church is located on the narrow road that descends from Porta Romana and encircles the town, positioned just before the Bisleti sub-portico. You can easily find it by following the winding path from Porta Romana, which offers scenic views as you approach this small but historically significant church.
In the 13th century, faithful followers painted an image of Our Lady on a rock along the path near the former Porta Piccola. The painting remained hidden under rubble from the 1350 earthquake until 1722, when it was rediscovered and named 'Madonna dell'Olivello' after an olive tree that had grown beside the rock.
A small octagonal temple was initially constructed around the rediscovered Madonna image in 1722, with retaining walls built to stabilize the steep, cliff-filled area. The church was later enlarged through the generous donations of Cardinal Bisleti, who is buried within the church and whose contributions shaped the building into its present form.
Before Olivella Church, the site was home to Porta Piccola, a gate that led to the Basilica of Santa Salome via a steep slope until the devastating earthquake of 1350 destroyed it. The earthquake's destruction left the area in rubble, which buried the 13th-century painting of Our Lady for centuries.
The church houses the ancient image of Madonna dell'Olivello, which has been venerated since its rediscovery in 1722, and serves as the focal point of worship. Additionally, Cardinal Bisleti, the generous benefactor who expanded the church, is buried here, making it an important pilgrimage site for both spiritual and historical reasons.
